This was a Winter project down-under. The garden was designed around existing structures, trees and large rocks.
The principle requirements were : easy maintenance, drought tolerance, an outdoor dining area and screening. The customer requested a paired down, simple palette along the lines of a Japanese garden but with an Australian aesthetic.
The existing raised bed was strengthened and walls rendered and painted a rusty colour. This matched the oval planting areas, with rusty metal edging.
The existing decking was replaced and extended. The same material was used around an existing stone boulder seat. Beautiful blue stone crazy paving was laid. A drainage channel was hidden in the strip of pebbles. This drains the paving by the patio sliding door.
Ash and Jason Snelleksz of BlueBird Homes and Landscapes did the fantastic build.
Busy lives, drought, Covid and work have all resulted in a longer than normal time to complete the planting of such a small scale design.
The Japanese aesthetic has been followed through with a limited palette of plants to produce low maintenance garden spaces. A lovely reward for two front line workers who will hopefully have a little more time to enjoy their garden.
Many thanks to Caroline Hyett of Caroline Hyett Gardens and Design for completing the planting design.
